I'd like to hear how some of the sounds were created. Particularly the intro to "M.E." and the main riff and chorus of "Cars". Was it a Polymoog, Minimoog, or what, and what kind of effects does it have? I suspect a phaser was used on M.E. but listening to the track when extremely high I thought it was a very slow LFO.

Ah we do like these around here >I'd like to hear how some of the sounds were created. Particularly the intro to "M.E." Everybody wants to know this one. Hot favourite for this is an Odyssey, although no-one has reproduced it yet. The modulation seems to be slow flanging. There are elements of distortion in the sound too - Shaun put forward the theory it was played through a guitar amp. Maybe there's a distortion pedal involved too. >and the main riff and chorus of "Cars". Hoary old chestnut this is now. Polymoog Keyboard (Model 280a), preset #1 'Vox Humana' played via the synth's 'direct' output thus bypassing the filter. It's ubiquitous on Pleasure Principle (and crops up all over Telekon, Dance, Warriors too). It's the Numan sound. The kind of squiggly-squacky lead sound after each verse in Cars is a Polymoog Synthesizer (model 203) ;D

Cheers.
I wonder if I can recreate that "squiggly-squacky" lead sound on my Voyager?

What? The 6 note Cars riff is a Poly as well? Or did I read that wrong.
Yours, confused of Milton Keynes...

No you didn't read it wrong - I did! Only just realised Synthy meant the bass riff Still, it's not like it's a major part of the tune or anything... The 6-note bass riff sounds like a combo of the above Odyssey(?) rasp a-la-Metal, plus a fat bass, I'm guessing a Minimoog. Live it deffo sounds like a big fat Minimoog bass.

Combo for sure Jords - a quick listen to the Pleasure Principle studio outtakes tape confirms it ;D

Just surfed the net on pleasure principle as I was bored and came upon an interesting thing.
Someone at Moog was asked about whether they were pleased that Gary Numan had put the Polymoog to the fore on the Pleasure Principle and they said no.
Apparantly the heavy use of Vox Humana and Polymoogs in video etc meant that it had become a signature Numan thing and many artists were shying away from using the instrument for fear of being branded a Numan clone. They thought their sales had been hit as a result.
Thinking about it the only other song I know that has Vox Humana is Visage and that was Chris Payne playing it anyway so maybe they were right.

Jords - no worries, you had me thinking Polys did super fat bass for a minute... Spoonz - maybe if TPP had been universally popular and sold millions all over the world Moog would have been happy - others would have been trying to copy him and bought Polys too. As it was, those of us who liked him were in the minority and reviled by many who actively DISliked Numan so they probably have a point... So it wasn't that they were big, heavy, limited sound wise, very expensive and not very reliable then after all - it was Numan's fault...

I don't buy it Colin. It's rather suss that a comment like that, allegedly made by someone at Moog should "suddenly" surface 26 years later. Just another bit Internet "misdirection" taken as gospel IMO

How about the handclap sounds that appear throughout the album?

I'm sure your right Shaun and it is hogwash and probably not from Moog at all but it shows the mind set of the Anti Numan brigade of the time. Maybe Roland lost sales due to the over use of the D50 or Alesis and the Quadracrap.

How about the handclap sounds that appear throughout the album? Simmons Clap Trap The analogue version though... not to be confused with the digital version that came out a few years later. He also used a Synare on the TP Tour and recorded with it on Telekon.

ctually i have an old issue of alternative press from 95; with Bob Moog in it. when they list all different artists that used moogs he said he didn't like numan at all.
it was not what he had in mind when he made the synths. not "artistic" enough use of the stuff.
then again after i saw the documentary dvd and saw what new music he likes, he's better off an engineer than a music critic.
yeah, i said it.

At the end of Films, there's this pad like spacey sound, the same as the one in each bridge of Cars. I'm guessing that's a 203a?

Nope - that's just the Vox Humana (280a) through an MXR Phase 90 (or Phase 100) effects pedal. Easy peasy.

I want one of those MXR phasers when my Polymoog arrives. Is it worth bidding high on the one with the bold letters and no LED, or getting the new Dunlop version?

Almost everyone says that the Dunlop remake doesn't have the depth of sound of the original. Personally, I have no experience of the Dunlop so I can't say whether it can reproduce the "Numan" sound or not. All I hear is that it isn't deep enough so... I went for a vintage pedal instead, especially after hearing this example from Daniel's:
