Re: the MXR phase 100. The best one I have is the 70's / 80's block logo (without led) but I have also owned the 70's script version, another block logo without led and the dunlop one too. They all sounded slightly different...
Intrestingly the phase on the script version and the other block logo I owned both sounded not quite as deep. (but very similar)
I wonder if it was a design change or just that different analogue units can sound slightly different even though they are made to the same spec (like the mini moog, I 've heard that the sound of mini moogs can vary from model to model).
The dunlop version is not as good but it is close. The more shallow phase is most noticable on the fast rate (like the cars intro) However, the difference is not so noticable on the slow phase (like the last few notes of cars, or throughout "sleep by windows", the end of "films" etc etc. Personaly the slow rate phase is the most usable so the dunlop one would be ok for that.
I hear that the phase 90 does it well but I have never tried one.
Just as a suggestion . . . Why not buy a cheap 2nd hand dunlop & try it. If its ok for your needs - great ! - you've saved some money towards another keyboard !
If not, then bid high on a block logo or script version, put them side by side and test the difference. You can always re-sell one of them on ebay later. All version seem to sell quite well.
In fact has anyone here got a dunlop phase 100 & a polymoog, if so you could upload a dunlop version of the Cars intro warble I did (above) & we can all hear the difference through the speed range from fast to slow.
