My band called fan-tan played last Friday night in our hometown. I told everyone about the band I joined last fall, but I haven't really posted anything about it since. Here's the scoop: The band started where I used to live, Chapel Hill NC, in 2006. I've been friends with all of them for several years from old bands. Right before my wife and I moved to Manhattan, they told me they were moving up as well and wanted me to play keyboards. I didn't take it too seriously, as my plan was to not be in a band, and work on my own stuff in our apartment for the year my wife did her fellowship in Dermatopathology. I left most of my keyboards (including the Polymoog) at my mother-in-law's house back in NC, and I was going to create epics with my Minimoog, Nord Electro, and figure out how to use softsynths and Reason for our year in New York. A month or two went by, and I had nothing to show for. I couldn't get into Reason, and wasn't inspired to write. Maybe I was still in culture shock with the new city environment, new job, new water, no car, etc (you'd think that would inspire me to write) So I ran into them at a bar a couple weeks after they moved to Brooklyn, and we talked about it again. I practiced with them a week later, and had my first gig with them a week after that. That was seven months ago. Since then, my wife and I decided to stay in NYC indefinitely. Her fellowship will be over in July, and she'll continue to practice at NYU.
Anyway, the band consists of Ryan on guitar and vocals, me on keys, and an Indonesian couple called Kuki and Sandee who play drums and bass. We went back to Chapel Hill last weekend, and had a really rowdy weekend. We played on Friday at a club called Local 506.
We have a recording of the show I'd like to share... The mix and quality are really good, though we were a bit "loose" (uh.. shitfaced)
I'm playing my Prophet 08 and my Prodigy.
You can download the mp3's and also ipod friendly m4a files here:
