Just had a rather groovy time listening to depeche mode "ultra" for the first time.
The last time I heard them (Live) was at the "limit" in sheffield circa 78-79.
changed didn't they.

I,ve always found that DM singles(in ultras case ,its no good, barrel of a gun) are amazing, but the albums that accompany them are usually full of much weaker tracks.

Didn't they just!!!
I think the "heroin years" were by far the best of their career. Dave Gahan for all his problems did look fantastic as a crucified messiah figure and the three albums, Songs Of Faith and Devotion, Ultra and Violator are (to my mind) almost like another band.
Much as I dislike smack, I have to say that as soon as Gahan recovered, they went back to sickly sweet formula pop again after and vanished from my radar of dark tortured music taste.
Great songs, fantastic production!

They share a link with Numan there in a way. With both... If you take the sum total of recordings for a particular album including all the b-sides etc, you could easily boot the weak songs and replace them with decent b-sides and roll-your-own stonker of an album and remain blissfully unaware of the dodgy material ;D
