OK then, I'll disclose a track I'm sort of working on. First, the guff. I'm currently mostly staying in hotels during the week now and am fiddling with Reason 4 on a laptop when I'm not p!ssed. My old music rig / PC is in bits at home but I remote desktop to my other home PC from the laptop and pick up mail and upload to sites etc. So, I started mucking around with basic break loops then layering my own beats over the top and ending up with 5 or 6 layer beats, all HP or LP as required. Suddenly I had sort of DnB ( ) type tunes going on! Not normally my cup of tea but, I'm bored so I just kept fiddling. With Reason 4, I have cooked up what has turned out to be a new genre of Drum and Bass, 'Melancholy DnB'. I then loaded into Ableton Live and stuck some layered Minimoog, CS-80 and cheesy vocals on it. I know it's not the normal type of thing here at Dubby but if you're interested in a WORK IN PROGRESS DnB amateur effort then click HERE.

I quite like that ! A mixture of new and old styles, & sounds like a late night at a European night club sort of tune. I so wanted to say something cheesy about this quote . . . "I'm currently mostly staying in hotels during the week now and am fiddling with Reason 4" #yikes# Reason 4000 cyber love doll (or something!) ;D

Before i tore apart the studio (and before my internet pc blew up) i recorded a coppla good uns. A new direction for the Photographers maybe? Ill upload something when im fixed up. So what's the story Gavin? PC's blowing up sounds all too familiar but what's with the tearing apart your studio? Is this a good thing or a bad thing for one of my favourite unsigned acts? Mark, I admit I didn't listen to all your track but that was because it wasn't doing a lot for me. I have to question to your notion of "doing something because you're bored" To me it sounded a bit like 15 year old Prodge with better recording equipment. What put me off was the bland europad sound and the stiff drums. You see, I think a beat like that needs to breathe a little. There's no funk in it! (By that I mean feel). It sounds too metronomic and exact to make me leap around. There's no subtle timing drift and clever dynamics to make it bounce and slide. As for the pad, that sound has put me off many a track before. It's just a personal thing but it seems to be the type of patch people just use first and ask questions later!!! I seem to remember I caught Danny using that sound once in one of his tracks and recommended he replace it with a big phased string patch from his Rhapsody. Now that was like the '70s equivalent of "europad" but for some reason it just sounded way better (strings on "Touch & Go" kind of thing). To conclude, I think I'd like to see you: a. do a track because you feel real desire (not just for something to do). b. work on pushing your notes around a little (not swing so much but definitely a looser funk factor). c. choose synth sounds that haven't already been done to death on the dance floor (retro nods being an exception but definitely NOT any '90s patches ).

Thanx for the comments so far guys. Shaun: Your ears are far too good for my humble fuzzy warbles but I enjoy all constructive criticisms nonetheless. Does your ear detect this in stuff like Goldie's Timeless or similar tracks? Can you recommend a good track to demonstrate please? I thought I improved it by layering 3 different sounds into it, oh well lol Touch & Go track? With my limited knowledge Shaun, apart from swing, how else can I address item B? Thanks for your detailed response so far

The carpet was pissing me off,so ripped it up and decided to paint the floor. All ive got to do now is put everything back together
