This is just a suggestion at the moment and is subject to Shauns approval and testing but I have long had the idea of Internet radio being fun.
The problem is always royalties/licenses etc.
The thought is now that myself and maybe Shaun might take it in turns to broadcast a show maybe on a Sunday or something of relevant music and our own/your stuff for a few hours with maybe a bit of banter and requests etc.
I have sussed the technology and have some good broadcasting software so I need to gauge the feeling.
Would anyone listen and would you contribute your material either written by you or a song from a band you really like.
By keeping it to Dubsounds members only and not broadcasting to the masses we should fall under the radar of Big Brother.
Shaun has done radio before so he will be pretty good but i'm willing to give it a go or even help anyone else set it up if they could be a Dubsounds radio star.
I have a pretty extensive music collection ans Shauns is even bigger so we have most things covered.
Let me know
Cheers

Yeah go for it. Exposure to new music is a great idea. I'd certainly never have listened to the butt hole surfers if Jonathan Ross hadn't played them!
Would it be possible to download the broadcast at a later time? I'm 12 hours out of synch here.

It could also be done as a podcast or something. That way someone could just download it and listen to it at their convienience. You could then have a thread to discuss the podcast (if you like)

In Principle the archive of the broadcast is easy. The encoder I am using has the option to record the stream to Hard Disk as it's broadcast.
The problem might be it's size. I will have to test it to see how big a couple of hours is. Then we have to host it for download which is where Shaun comes in as I don't have the webspace (only 25mb)
Communicated with Shaun tonite and he will be back on his feet soon and will chip in with his thoughts.
The stream will likely be at 96kbps or 128 depending on the load (how many listeners) which is pretty much Cd quality and broadcast in Windows media format or Mp3 if the bandwidth is an issue (MP3 uses less)
watch this space.

I would certainly contribute music for it. I think it's a great idea!

Col, you're aware of my thoughts on this and we both have the same vision so that's cool. I won't be linking the radio through the main site obviously as that could be accessed by anyone and we would certainly get into legal problems but by linking it here in the forum only, only registered members will be able to access the broadcasts. My overall vision is to combine the broadcasts with the chat room so that whoever is broadcasting live will also be in chat at the same time so the rest of us can pop in and talk about the music being played, give some feedback and make requests all in real time. I'd like to have a play what you like attitude. I have a music library of over 44,000 tracks and Colin has a mega collection too so that covers pretty much everything. I'm not bothered at all about playing commercial music between ourselves in here but I would like to feature our own music in my own "show" as a John Peel session type of situation. I don't really have the patience or interest to archive broadcasts to be honest and the gigabyteage would be hefty to say the least. I'm also not into the download (leeching) idea much either. I think if a listener likes a track, there's nothing stopping them popping into chat and doing a trade with the DJ for something they don't have via email in a gentlemanly fashion . I would like to run the station 24/7 on a low bandwidth 48kbit setting if that's possible. Most of the time the music would be from an unnatended PC with a fat harddrive and massive playlist on random. When a live show kicks off though, the bandwidth could crank up to 128kbit and anyone who wants to DJ (and is prepared to set their PC up to handle it) is welcome to pick a slot which will be advertised. Anyway, that's my preliminary thoughts... suffice to say I'm grabbing the weekly Saturday 8pm to 12 midnight show (even later depending on how stoned I get while on-air) and it will be me own take on the John Peel format so... expect lots of obscure Belgians at the wrong speed, 1920's wax cylinder recordings mixed with the latest hardcore electro, rock and a passion for turning you buggers onto some seriously eclectic hed muzik.
