I like the effects on the drums. You are using some great sounds (as always). I love the phase effect on the string synth too . I quite like Lu's vocal - I hope it's not cleaned up too much when you re-do it, it seems to fit the style of the song being slightly wayward. I wonder if when the guitar lines are added, the fast piano chord lines will seem too full ? maybe drop down to single notes to allow space for the guitar ? can't really tell until the guitar is on there though. Nice one Martin. it sounds like an "a" side single with a bit of a retro 80's feel, without sounding dated. ;D Looking forward to hearing this one develop.

New years day, mmm,i see where your coming from joe Some good points there dan ;D It would be alot easier(and make more sense)to write the songs with the guitarist present, but he lives in st.helens(65 miles away)so i have to send him the tracks when i've finished with them, but i'm so used to filling them up with my own parts that it's gonna take some getting used to

A side... right, I get it The vocal treatment, (not the performance - I know it's a rough) is the same as the stonking B-side isn't it? Well it doesn't work at this tempo but that's not very important right now, (that's easily changed). 2m 6s is way to long to wait for a chorus! I like the Chorus though (I just find the verses a bit dull - more variation would be nice). At this point I then wrote nearly three paragraphs of how I would alter the arrangement if i was working on it with you guys right now but got bored (sorry ). It took less time to chop up your mp3 and re-arrange it into the format I was describing so check it out. Why waste words? It's only a VERY rough idea and would need to be re-recorded properly rather than badly edited like this but I've chopped out a lot of padding and got to the point which is what I think it needed to be fair. No doubt after spending so long on it, a heavy slashing like this will sound odd at first but I hope you'll see exactly what 3000 words might have tried to tell you.

[/b] [/quote] I see what you mean,i kind of doubled everything which,i suppose, gets quite tedious to listen to? This was the first track that i consciously set about using a structured arrangement,verse/bridge/chorus etc.cos i don't usually work that way But the song i nicked the arrangment off was......are friends electric?....probably not the best choice

On those early records, Numan rarely wrote choruses at all and certainly paid no attention at all to traditional song structure, so I certainly wouldn't recommend his work to anyone studying pop/rock composition and arrangement Martin Where is the chorus in Are Friends Electric / Cars / Complex / Down In the Park...? Of course this inevitably gives rise to sections of the song becoming surrogate chouruses. I can't help but wonder if this is where the audience participation "whoa oh's" came from in AFE. Because the little synth break (hook) has been "vocalised" by the crowd as a substitution for one. Evidently, you can get away without a chorus if your hook/riff is strong enough and Cars is a prime example. No chorus at all - just the decending polymoog string melody and that superb bass guitar/minimoog combo bass line as hooks and basic into verse bridge verse. One obvious exception has to be, I Die You Die. In fact in many ways it follows the text book pop formula to a tee with clearly defined intro/verse/bridge/chorus/mid 8/outro structure. Now that's a good one to look at.

My influences for song structure are Phil Spector or old fifties rock n roll records believe it or not.
