Some of you may have heard enough of this one last time round, but I have at last finished a track called Flight ! It still has the improved Dubby Drums sounds but I have changed around some of the sounds to hopefully give a good blend of Kraftwerk, Numan & Me influences. It is also a bit shorter and I have tried to use EQ to bring out particular bits (thanks for the tips along the way Shaun) You can find it on this page: (third track down) www.dannymoog.co.uk/first.htmlFor those interested, I have changed the lead sound to a rip rawing minimoog V. Added some Pro 5 along the way and added two sounds that (hopefully) sound like a cross between the ARP scream & an ARP Pro Soloist (at the beginning and end of the chorus type bit) There is also a different version of Watching on that page too (Watching Extended) Which is different to the Dubby FM version - MORE POLYMOOOOOOOOG !

F7: Was that done with your real P5 or the virtual Danny (hard to tell in the mix). Not sure about the oddy sim at the moment. It sounds a bit too tight (is it quantised?). Normally, I'd start the notes a touch early to compensate for the glide-up so they hit the end note on time (not the start). The P5 (AFE 1980) patch would have sat better without that reverb IMO. It pushes it too far back in the soundstage for a lead. I would have tried a short slap/doubling delay (not that I'm saying it would work either, just that it would be my gut instinct). Overall I think it sounds a bit rushed (on first listening). It could do with being a minute and a half longer with more space being created to bring out each instrument so they have their own "moment" in the mix. It sounds a bit like having a conversation where everyone is talking at once Watching Ext: Nice but we should talk about "dub techniques" some time Dan. I think you're in danger of letting Orion take centre stage in your production now you've got to grips with it. Time to break that shell and get things a bit more "outboard and dirty" ;D

Hey music lover by s'express kept going through my head while listening to flight The mix is alot cleaner than any of mine ;D I've got some lyrics for "watching" in a file somewhere(ok, on a bit of plasterboard in my van somewhere)i might try and dig them out,i think the chorus sounds totally numan(your music not my lyrics)

That could be really interesting I imagine that the song will sound much different with vocals of some sort. Let me know if you find them. ;D

Shaun the P5 was the virtual one. My real one is still faulty. (anyone know any good repairers local(ish) to Sussex ?) There is no reverb on the P5, but there is a softer sound behind it which is washed in reverb, I might try removing that sound altogether & see what the P5 sounds like on it's own. It is a shame it feels rushed because it definately wasn't ! The ARP sound is someting I created on the Korg Legacy, mainly using the MS20. I will try out the different timing, I see what you mean with the glide thing. I'm not sure what you mean with Watching though. The additional sounds were hand played & I think the only extra thing done in Orion was an effect on a drum part near the beginning.

After taking on board comments from Shaun & others I have made a few minor alterations and posted up Flight8 on my webspaec for those of you that want this slightly altered version. www.dannymoog.co.uk/Flight8.wmaI have reduced the reverbed lead line behind the Prophet 5 & increased the volume of the Prophet 5 in the mix to bring it out more. Also I have adjusted the extra gliding sound behind the polymoog chorus to hopefully make the timing more natural, plus a couple of other little bits. ;D

It is a shame it feels rushed because it definately wasn't ! You may be misunderstanding me Danny. I don't mean the recording was rushed (i.e. thrown together). I was actually talking about the pace of the track and the timing of the notes mate. Sorry if you read it wrong. As for the Orion comment. It does sound a bit like it's all coming out of one box (that's why I thought it was all done in Orion). I think next time I'm over I'll have to see if I can't show you how to vary the sound of each piece more by using different effects (especially cheap pedals, I mean look at the MXR ) and you're about ready for phase two of your EQ tutorial BTW, if you use the same reverb unit for instance on all your tracks (even with different patches) that unit will stamp its identity over everything... hence back to the all out of one box syndrome which I guess is the difference between a home demo and a pro-recording. I think you're about to find out why I have three digital verbs, a couple of spring units and two bucket brigade devices. Wanna hear that lot chained together

Sounds great Cool. I think I have been moving into this direction slightly (although not recording wise) I recently got myself a Melos analogue echo unit and have been scanning ebay for a good but cheap spring reverb. I also had an idea of chaining two MXR phase 100's for fun.
