On the Gary Numan song “Trois Gymnopedies” it starts out with a piano for I think 2 bars and then a after about 5 seconds a really great sounding synth comes in for a coulple of bars before the main melody. (It repeats again before the second half of the song) Does anyone know what that second instrument is? I’m guessing the piano intro is a CP-30. Is the second synth that comes in a Pro-soloist? I know that was used around this time in his set up. It sounds unlike any other synth I’ve heard.

I don't know for a fact, but I've always assumed is was a Pro-Soloist. Same as the harmony to the melody in the chorus of Remind Me To Smile, particuarly live..

It's the "Song Whistle" preset from the Pro soloist.
Denis Haines owned the instrument and introduced it to Gary. It's all over Denis Haines "The Listening Principle"

Thanks! That just might be my next synth... Luckily they come up farily cheap now and then.

The Pro Sol is also the "whimpering puppies" in the background on Please Push No More

Hate to contradict you Dubs, but on the credits it lists a Polymoog, Minimoog and Jupiter-4. i also seem to recall Numan talking about finding an 'emotional' sound on the Jupiter-4 and using it on Please Push No More, so i think that's your puppies. i haven't found that sound yet myself. Ah for the days when Numan twiddled knobs :sigh emoticon:
BTW the piano intro to Trois Gymnopedies is a real piano, with a CP-30 joining in after that.

Don't know about the puppies but Gymnopodies is definately the Pro Soloist as the main synth accompanied by Vox Humana after half way.
I have found that Gary doesn't always credit all synths used on his albums. Look at PP. I was always credited as Mini and Polymoog but the Odyssey was used just as much as the Mini.

I think the pro-soloist is the lead synth in the first half of the song. The instrument I was talking about comes in after about 4-5 seconds and then is quickly relegated to the background throughout (except for when it comes back in for a second in the middle before the polymoog). It is the second instrument to come in. So it makes sense that it could be a real piano followed very quickly by a CP-30 and then pro-soloist....?
If it is a CP-30 then it must have an effect on it as I owned a CP-30 and never got a sound quite like that out of mine.

That's exactly it. What settings do you have on the CP-30?

Nicely done Col. I take it that's all DSP though... any clues?

The Cp30 is set to preset 1 for both ouputs with each slightly detuned. Full Decay and a bit of Tremelo.
The plate reverb fx is on my mixer as a part of the onboard fx and the delay is a 200ms soft room delay from cool edit pro.
The sound is there without the delay but it gives a bit more depth to it.
