A couple of you have already heard this track that we did for a numan cover comp at afenet. As the comp seems to have fizzled out i'm posting it here instead This version features our very own gavin on bass(thanks to shaun for the suggestion and thanks to gavin for doing it) LIQUIDLOVE

I'm finding it difficult to comment on this one, so I'm gonna waffle... I like it & have saved it to my pc. I like the synth sounds ;D , the guitar fits in well and sounds great ;D. I like the breakdown in the middle and when everything comes back in just when you dont expect it - nice Strangely though Louise's vocals dont seem to suit the song somehow. Normally I like her voice and her vocal interpretations of different songs etc, but there's something about this one that doesn't fit (for me). I can't put my finger on it though. Anyway - over all I like it & if I had done it I'd be well chuffed Thanks for sharing.

No, it's not your monitors Gavin. There's hardly anything there to boost mate. I had the 20-70hz range cranked up 6db and the 70-250hz up 2½... still couldn't raise anything much. There's hardly any kick drum at all on his CR-78???
Anyone who claims to be able to fix a mix in mastering is talking bollocks. If it isn't recorded right, you're buggered #gone#
Who mixed in your bass guitar Gavin? Did you do it, or did you send it to Martin "no bass" Screamer to mix in himself? I think he's got serious monitoring problems not us #scratchhead# #geek#

I can asure you my recording has plenty of bass ;D. I sent it as separate unmixed track with slight compression.

Can you mail it to me Gavin? I might be able to rescue the mix by adding your bass again on top of what Martin's done.
There could be a slight phase problem putting a bass on a bass but I can do some filtering...

A bit like Dan i find it hard to pass judgement on it. I don't dislike it but my view is tainted by the fact that it's a cover. Confused - Let me explain.
If you played it to me and i did't know the original i would say great. But
I love the original for it's rawness and it's upbeat tempo to what is a quite haunting song in a way. For me that's lost in the interpretation.
So my dilemma is I like it but not so much in comparison to what i already know. Bollocks i hear you say but that was my instant reation.

What was supposed to be a half hour fix-up turned into a three hour marathon trying to rebuild the bass guitar and add a bass drum to Martin's mix. I'm breaking every rule in the book by uploading the mix before I've let my ears rest but hey... we'll see if it sounds shit in the morning. It sounds OK right now though. Liquidlove II Hardly ideal, being a rescue job and all but hopefully it now sounds more like it was supposed to? Night night.

Quick one Colin having just read your post.
It IS an original Liquidscreamer song apparently. They've used Numan's words to enter it into the latest covers competition over at AFE.
I hope they loose the Numan entirely and do their own thing with it vocally.

I'm not going back and doing it a second time Martin!!! #wall# We'll talk about it when you've turned it back into your own song and then I'll mix it properly from ALL the parts separated (as per) ;D

The main thing is Martin, can you now hear where you fucked up the bass end by comparing the two?
I'm not saying my 'rescue job' is perfection (FAR from it - it's a botch up at best - far better to start from scratch with the mix for me) but the frequencies are now there that you should be aiming for.
I was just wondering...
How flat are your monitors Martin? Do you have an equaliser, or... even worse - one of those 'loudness' or 'bass boost' buttons switched in on your amp? Don't use hi-fi amps if you can help it mate. A straight power amp from the control room output of your desk is fine.
You see, I can't help thinking that you've boosted the bass at home in your studio to a point where everything sounds heavy there but the minute you send your mixes out, there's no bass on them because you removed most of it in the mixing because the bass on your monitors was too loud.
You really should be checking your mixes against what you consider to be a top notch pro studio recording off a CD. I know you like Radiohead so why not try putting on Pyramid Song or something because you don't get much better contemporary mixing than on that album!
I'm only saying this because you told me off for not noticing your bassline in an earlier version of this song. Then you sent me an exaggerated mix which you thought I would definitely hear. Sadly BOTH were weak Martin.
I know setting up in a new room can be difficult, especially as you have to get used to the new acoustics and let your ears 'learn' the room but since you moved downstairs, your mixes are much better in the top/mid range (especially Lou's vocals) but there is no bass at all.
