Oh yeah, bring it on... the toughest one ever (or is it?)
Metamatic for me. The best electro album ever put down on tape. Minimalism at its best and devastatingly atmospheric with it.
Toss up between Films and Underpass... no contest.
Thoughts?

Underpass and Metal kind of had the same "wow" effect on me. 2 albums are like chalk and cheese to an extent though. A bit like comparing a flanger with a phaser...

I've got both. Had them since they came out on vinyl. Both excellent. There's no way to say which is best...
I currently have MM in the car. I find that I now like the tracks that I used to skip originally.
Same goes for PP, I could NEVER listen to conversation, but now it gets stuck in my head for days..

On balance it's still PP for me. Metamatic is of course marvellous, technically more adept, and to my mind more like Replicas in it's evocation of stark urban landscapes. Flangetastic.
To my shame I heard the Peel sessions version of Conversation only for the 1st time this weekend. One word - WOW! Tight as hell, great stripped down synths, and a killer vocal. Better than the PP version. Also heard MIDFY in session which I'd forgotten about. Rocks yer sox off.

I like them both but Metamatic is an album that is both superb and ordinary in it's content for me.
Some songs I love and others I'm not that fussed about. Whilst all of PP songs are not mega there is a larger percentage for me.
John Foxx certainly made a great job with what he had to play with at the time though. Great live as well.
Foxx would get my ticket money at the moment.

I have all the Foxx / Gordon stuff as well as Metamatic. There's some shite among the f/g stuff, but certain bits shine. I LOVE Overpass.
The Foxx stuff I can't get into is the garden/ in mysterious ways/ golden section. I just don't "get" it.
Cathedral Oceans I/II/III is great as background music.
Oh, and I'm not sure what to make of the Foxx /Budd stuff, either.
But CRASH AND BURN ROCKS!

I've only heard the preview tracks of Metamatic on Amazon, but it doesn't sound like the sort of music I like. The vocals especially sound the same as a lot of other bands at the time.
The Pleasure Principle, on the other hand, is one of my most favourite albums of all time. And there's nothing else like it.
