A couple of you here may remember a song we did called scream which shaun amazingly brought to life with his special magic Well we've done a different shorter version to do live as the original sits better on headphones when your depressed . SCREAM(ALTERNATIVE)If you havn't heard the original; SCREAM(DUBHEAD RE-EXPERIENCE)The alternative doesn't claim to be better,just..an alternative

Sadly this is your Machine and Soul I can see why you might want to go for a live re-working but this is overproduced and crude. All the quirky oddball elements that made me love the original (and that unique Liquidscreamer sound) have gone and been replaced by "instant rocks off" bollocks IMO. I think trying to appeal to a "market" is fatal Martin. You might prove me wrong short-term by winning over those that don't like their music to be particularly challenging but ultimately you could lose your identity. I have to say I turned this off after a minute or so. It has nothing to do with my prior involvement either. Your earlier demo (which I stuck very closely to for good reason) was one of the most unuusual and haunting songs I'd heard in years.

Well, thats either gonna put people off listening completely or they will listen to see if it's as bad as you suggest.

Without wishing to jump on the bandwagon and club you over the head, having never heard the song before, I have to say that the 'new' version sounds like a demo of the 'old' version.
I know that's not terribly constructive. Sorry #nobody#

Its alright. I can see what you're trying to do. If you want stuff to work live you need it more immediate and straight foward, none of that twiddly bollox.

Cheers everyone ;D When we did the original live once,i could here someone on the recording of the gig remark"is this wake me up before you go-go" Thats when i realised that our stuff wasn't really suited to be played live. So i set about re-working some of the older stuff and adding loads of covers because,as gavin says, people in a pub are not going to keep quiet and listen to all the nice "extra bits"in a song. IMO it needs to be simple and "in yer face" I really love the original and the new version is not a replacment but an alternaive version. I'm aiming to seperate studio work and live stuff, a bit like ,having a really cool pair of trainers that you love but if it snows you need to have an alternative Thanks again #thumbsup#

I understand where you're coming from Martin I have done all along). We've all done the circuit and as Gavin says "you need it more immediate and straight foward, none of that twiddly bollox". Give 'em a bunch of covers, throw in a couple of your most catchy originals and "thank you, goodnight"... I've said all along that you and Louise have something. I just don't like the direction you've taken for some of your live material because I can't see anything in it I like. I see your uniquenes being traded for the sake of trying to please. Personally, I would give that wanker the finger and play on regardless of whether he mocked a song or not. The point is you got a reaction. OK, he was taking the piss and trying to look clever to the crowd... but better that than being ignored completely. Think about it... all bands have to put up with hecklers for Christ's sake! I still believe that the best ones just told 'em to get fucked and got on with it. Imagine the reactions to the Pistols on their first tour. Do you think they would turn round a go "oh there's a bloke moaning... shall we do Tie A Yellow Ribbon instead?" What to do eh? Try and please everyone and head straight for the cabaret circuit or put up with a bit of heckling and pick up a small (but hopefully growing) following that WANT YOU to play depressing twiddly bollocks I would rather drop the song and retain my integrity than bastardise it. So anyway. You've put up your re-take on one of your best songs designed to APPEAL to the masses and asked us to comment. The last bit is what I don't get. If you and Louise are happy with the new version, whatever I or anyone else says is irrelevant. But... seeing as though you asked ;D

The trainers quip wasn't a criticism of anyones comments only a justification for doing an alternative version for which the criticism seemed to be aimed at,as opposed to a direct comment about the track itself. I agree with most of your advice, but we went into the live stuff with loads of our own songs and a couple of covers wheras i feel we should do it the other way round by slowly adding our own songs as a bit of interest grows while in the meantime working on some more conventional "liquidscreamer"songs in the studio(loft, till the extension is built). The track "look at you"doesn,t have any of the recent "live"elements to it IMO. I really do appreciate any comments, good or bad. #boozer01# ;D

I'm not a gigging musician myself and never really have been (2 gigs) but I think your last comment hit the nail on the head regards the own/cover ratio.
Lets face it most people go to see a local gig just to hear something familier they can bop and sing along to. That's been my experience anyway. Then throw in a few of you own in the middle somewhere once you've got them onside.
As far as writing to please an audience as apposed to what feels right i not sure that ever works well. I can think of an artist close to my heart that spent years trying to be something their not and went nowhere fast. Do what you do and stick with it. That's what sets you apart from the rest.
I'm not going to comment on the various mixes because they are all probably better than i can do so nuff said but I would value those comments above if the song were mine. There meant as constructive and nobody would gain from telling you it's the best if they feel it's not.
I learnt my weaknesses very quickly from a few constructive comments and am working on doing something about it
keep em coming
