Had a reply from Billy Currie today. Well he said he can't speak for the album because he wasn't there for the recording of most of it but live Airlane bassline is an Odyssey. A Mk2 all the time billy was there. He isn't sure but he thought it went through an Mxr Fx of some kind. maybe a distortion.
He said Gary was not a fan of Mini Bass sounds and bucked the trend preffering the Odyssey. Most people did the opposite and used the Oddy for lead stuff.

Billy has a good memory by sounds of it. I remember reading some interview with Numan in the 80s - he said he always used Odys for live bass sounds as it "cut through the mix more than a minimoog". Last used in either 83 or 84 I think. Billy last used his live in 83 (overseas tour).

Billy also said he has just had his original Odyssey restored and used it on his last album. another convert back to analog. ;D

Not enough more like! It's a bugger of a sound to nail down, that's for sure. I've tried briefly on my Odyssey but it's not there yet by a long way. Might have another crack tonight.

To tell you the truth mate, no... not to my ears. It's like about 50% there but there's 50% missing too if you get what I mean and as always it's that illusive magical 50% that none of us have ever managed to put our finger on. Vox Humana II in many ways

Vox Humana II in many ways I totally agree Shaun it does sound similar but, listening to the original and comparing the two there are ALOT of characteristics to the original sound which are missing on the Drylands version, it sounds similar in a mix of a song, but on its own it just does not really stand up. Well I guess if NI were trying to emulate "that" sound they'd have called it something a bit more Numan-y than "Drylands". Still a decent analog-y lead/drone sound (in a 1979 kinda way).

Ive got to admit I do like the Drylands sound, but comparisons to Numans sound it does not quite cut it, but as I`ve said it sound pretty good in the mix even though certain characteristics are missing. Ive just finished Airlane, I'm not 100% happy with it even though its a cover version, it does not sound too bad, I have added a CR78 to it, I'm not too sure whether I should have added the CR78 at all, but comments on this should be interesting if Shaun does put it up on his site Russ

He said Gary was not a fan of Mini Bass sounds and bucked the trend preffering the Odyssey. Most people did the opposite and used the Oddy for lead stuff. I found this surprising. You can clearly hear it's the Ody on Airlane and MIDFY - it's Billy's trademark osc sync sound. BUT if GN was so keen on using Ody's for bass, at least live, why did he only have one on stage (used generally for solos) and have bloody hundreds of Minimoogs, all doing booming bass sounds? Why not a fleet of Odys?
