Funny that Russell but so have I.
My problem is I can't get a Mini sound for the bass line that i'm happy with at the mo. What are you using for that.
Maybe we can share sounds as I can offer the real Vox Humana.

Are you talking about 'that' bass sound which is all over Pleasure Principle, epecially prominent in the opening of Metal? I can't even get it on a real Mini! I think it's narrow pulses with one osc set 1 oct higher (but mixed very low - just a hint) and then eq'd to make it thinner still. And then put through a vicious flanger. In short, I think it's pretty irelevant what ever synth is used, it's more in the eq and processing. What ever they did, they must have liked it 'cos it's the same bloody sound used on virtually every track! Any ideas, chaps....?

Radical theory but Jordan and I are pretty sure now, (after a previous discussion over at AFENet) that it isn't a Mini at all... rather an Odyssey! I sent an email to Numan a few weeks ago asking if he could confirm but don't hold your breath waiting for a reply Regardless of whether it is an Oddy or Mini, it's extremely likely that it's going through a guitar rig anyway. Logically one might assume that Numan just plugged his guitar lead into the back of his Odyssey one day and whammo. My ears detect fuzz and a flangey/chorus and some form of mic/cab set up. I have a photo of Numan taken by Garry Robson at Marcus Music in 79 recording the Pleasure Principle. He's stood behind his 280a (on a wooden wallpaper pasting table by the looks of it) with a white oddy on top and a mini to his left. On the floor there's a combo amp with a boom mic pointing into it! I'll see if I can get permission to put it online tonight.

I`ve always been lead to believe its an Odyssey,I know its not from a MiniMoog but its quite easy to re-create on the nord, its close but not close enough yet, but I have a much better version on the Absynth, the preset is called `Drylands` and it really does sound similar to the original, if anyone has Absynth 1.3.2 then give it a whirl.
You may want to play around with the LP 24 DB filter and change it to something else, but the sound Im using on Airlane is the closest I have heard it to the original bass sound that Gary used for Airlane, Metal. etc.

Yeah, that's the one. Steve (The Touring Principle webmaster) sent me the original photo a while ago but at the time it was supposed to be hush hush as the guy who bought Garry Robson's photo album had asked Steve not to put it online. I've has it blown up and the phto now hangs on my studio wall next to my 280a (soft aren't I? ). It looks like Steve has put the pics up for general consumption now so I guess the permission thing is cool now.

Playing devils advocate (I do like a good row!), looking at the setup in the photo, one mght assume that the keybd to the players left hand (ie the Mini) might be used for bass duties whilst the right hand ones (PM and Ody) are there for right handed lead lines. Just a thought....

I will email Billy Currie. He is normally pretty good at replying and he might remember from his Numan days.
Me personally I still think it's a Mini but I have no evidence to back it up other than the fact that I saw a video somewhere from a live performance where the bassline is played by RRussell Bell on a Mini but I stand to be corrected.
Will let you know what billy says.
Either way I can't get it on anything I have.

Yeah thats if Shaun wants to put the unfinished version of Airlane up on his site, but its not finished, it just just a demo to see how it was coming on, but it does not sound too bad, with the exception of No FX,EQ mastering etc, and its even got a CR78 in it, which Im still not too sure about!!!! Perhaps we could just hear 'the bass sound', if you don't want to put the unfinished track up. yet?

I haven't received anything Russ - I'm guessing it was bounced because my inbox is full at the moment as I'm on the road a lot at the moment.
Not being funny but could you clear it with me first before mailing me larges files. It's good internet manners anyway, but could save on hassle if this situation occurs again (with warning, I could have made sure there was space for it).
Cheers.

That patch should really be called "The Pleasure Principle" or "singalongaNuman"... After reading this the other day I dug out that Drylands patch. Sounds v sweet (in a 1979 kinda way). Luvverly.
