Ok, im new to soft synths though ive had hardware synths since the 80's. i recently installed way out wares Arp Axxe VST to compare it with my c1976 vintage Arp Axxe. I have to be honest aprt from a few of the presets it doesn't really sound anything like my original Axxe...... it sounds far better Yes i know its better to have knobs and sliders for the hands on experience but, for recorded materiel it wins hands down !!! just wondering if any of you have compared VSTi's with original synths and how, sound wise they stack up ?

Some are good, some are bad I think.
I like the ones that can sound like the original but have much more potential ;D

Personally I rate my Sonic|Core Scope synths as some of the best. In native plug-in land I rate GForce stuff, especially impOSCar. I find Arturia highly overrated.
You have to be careful about the polyphony thing though. The Odyssey for instance cannot be easily 'polyphonicised' as the architecture needs to be changed, so Oddity by GForce is duophonic. The Prodyssey by Sonic|Core is polyphonic but it means that the duophonic sounds are impossible.

My problem with VSTi particularly an emulation is the interface. My laptops have always had high res screens some of the emulations like the imposcar have relatively tiny GUI's when displayed at the native screen res almost to the point of unusability. I realise that imitating the appearance helps sell the product as much as the sound to many, but is it really ergonomic? Which VST do you think has the best GUI and sound? ??

Without giving too much away this issue is addressed in the new version.

I have compared the Native instrument Pro53 tot he Prophet 5 Rev2 and for some patches its dead on and others its not even close but better is relative. the software has high pass filters and on-board delay FX. But I think we are kind of missing the point in approaching this whole topic as a VS kind of thing. Now that softsynths are out of their infancy they are simply now another type of synth to use. Sure lots of them are there to emulate the hardware for those who 1 don't have them or 2 don';t have the room or 3 simply want to have everything as software for convenience. I prefer softsynths that deliver things hardware can't and I like hardware the delivers things software can't and use both accordingly. My advice is stop playing the things side by side in some shoot out situation and get on with enjoying them all.

Agree with all that. My Pro53 with the factory patches (which I guess you used to comp to your rev 2) are spot on in places but yeah.. who cares? Not sure I'd want everything on a laptop. Where's the knobbage and hernia inducing kilos of steel?
A good example of a decent VSTi for me would be something like the Predator. That's got some serious bollocks. A great example of the analogue em taken a bit further. I like Albino too ;D

Yeah. The point of software is that it can do things hardware can't. The point of hardware is it can do things software can't. Happy days all round I say. All the Rob Papen vst stuff is great and www.g-sonique.com/ make some great stuff at very reasonable prices if your just starting to dip your teo in to vsts that and important factor.
