So this is the farewell tour. Trouble is no one told New Zealand. I see there is now a post from Trent on the NIN website that went up on the 16th the day before the NIN gig in Auckland which expresses his pissed offed-ness.
I suppose if the Kiwis had had chance to see this Trent would not have had the crowd reaction he did when he announced they would not be coming back to New Zealand! The booing was deafening and only drowned out by the sound of the fat crowd surfer being unceremoniously dropped to the floor as the, up till then, adoring fans tried to fathom what they had done wrong.
I don't expect Trent will be quite so blunt at future farewell gigs but I guess the message will be out there by then.
So what was it like? Well the light show was impressive but conventional lacking the Bells and whistle associated with the North American shows. No projected movies no screens but lots and lots of lights and crowd blinders, couldn't complain. Trent worked the stage with an energy I would expect is pretty hard to keep up. Together the visuals were mesmerising.
For this tour it seems NIN is a 4 piece with a new drummer and as far as I could tell no Charlie Clauser!(EDIT apparently he's not the last current keyboard player anyway. The point is there was NO dedicated keyboard player OK) Perhaps thats why the set list consisted entirely and almost unremittingly of the ultra thrashy NIN. Gone was the glitchy electronica and most of my favourites. My NIN is more "with teeth", and tracks like "closer" and "something I can never have" as a result I left the gig a little disappointed and metal saturated. Clearly Trent was worried that the new NIN and its set list might not travel and asked the crowd on more than one occasion if it was still with them and offered an explanation of the choices he had made
Clearly I was in a disgruntled minority of 2 at least I was until Trent pissed on everyone's bonfire.
If you like full in yer face thrash distorted geetar wall of sound NIN then get along to this tour. Meself I think I would have been happier playing my "beside you in time" DVD
Summary 10/10 for the fantastic stagecraft, 4/10 for set list and the new line -up.
A sad farewell, fucking lucky I have me DVD's
