Not bad Mark The Mini clone synth is as close as i've ever got anyway. The Polymoog sound really sucks though i'm afraid but it's not easy to get close to that without Nostalgia or the real thing.
by the way Airlane is still gonna happen. Just the Bass synth to go. Lacking a bit of time at the mo. Not as straightforward as it seemed as the tempo of your track didn't seem quite right. when i compared to a Live version by Numan it was 6 bpm faster than yours.

The bass sound is fairly good as is the track but what i find with covering numan songs is;cos they are fairly simple musically you need to replicate the original sounds almost exactly because that is what created such an impact in the first place or,which i prefer, you take it somewhere completely different.
Keep em coming ;D

What do you think of the bass synth? That's a bit good is that Mark! Just about as close as I've heard - good work fella ;D I'd risk a tad more flanging myself just to see if it helped. What is this? I think Col's being harsh about the Poly sound. It's pretty good to me.

Me Harsh, well maybe.
I agree with Martin though that the sound has to be as good or a very good alternative otherwise the song doesn't have that bite anymore and the Polymoog sound just doesn't grab me at all. It not a reflection on Mark because we all know how difficult it is to copy.

Bit odd about tempo. I seem to recall playing over the top of the album version to try and get it matched but then I am a complete NEWB!

It's: -Cubase -SonikSynth2 Bass guitar -Battery2 -Nostalgia (I must have f*cked up because I've had a better Polymoog from it on my Airlane www.reemsoft.co.uk/markreeman/Airlane.mp3 and Observer www.reemsoft.co.uk/markreeman/Observer.mp3 tracks) ...and for the bass synth - Absynth Dryland patch slightly adjusted but more importantly I put it through Nomad Guitar Legends with phaser +some effects, compressing, maximising etc.

I used the Nomad on one of my experiments too but chose a flanger because that's what I hear in the original. A phaser lacks the metallic edge.
It is a bloody good stab at "the grail" perhaps a bit too much amp sim (giving it a bit of a honky midrange) but easily corrected with post EQ.
Your Airlane Vox Humana is much better you're right and to a casual ear would easily pass. It's a bit difficult not to be too be a perfectionist when you have a real Polymoog sat next to you all day long and I apreciate the effort you put into getting that sound. Fuck.. I tried everything for the best part of 20 odd years before I gave in and bought me a real Poly. Now I can sit back and grin like a smug bastard but I haven't forgotten my old patches (some of which were pretty close to my ears at the time).
Cool ;D

My recommendation for anyone wanting the numan vox humana sound without the cost and space consumation of a real polymoog would be to try and find a vintage mxr phase 100. I,ve just been messing with nostalgia through mine and it can create some fabulous eerie sounds (polymoog strings probably sounds better than vox humana) ;D

What do you think of the bass synth? I think that bass sound is bloody good - deffo the closest I've heard in (too) many years of trying to nail it. The only thing not right , as discussed, is the flanging. Are you able to disect the sound to tell me how it's achieved? How many osc, what footage, waveform, etc?

I think so but it'll have to wait till the weekend as I'm just adding the finishing touches to a *Viola* and claps!! come back Billy, all is forgiven LOL

For some reason the album version is129bpm but "live" it's 134. You are close to the album but i think the live version sounds better with a slightly faster tempo. Just me being picky. That Mini sound is now very very close. Just needs a bit more ooomph from something.

That "some reason" my friend used to be something they called "live music". No click track, no drummer with headphones, no DAT backing, no miming... just Cedric Sharpley banging his sticks together - 1, 2, 3 and... It would be as fast as he felt it should be on any given night. The band would take his lead and he would then respond to the band. They would even speed up a bit in the exciting bits It was all back a long, long time ago when people physically hit things with lumps of wood... very primal, ug, ug!!

Much more realistic polymoog and a step forward overall. #thumbsup# But the left channel was distorted in my headphones
