i always liked this track - very unusual hit single. Probably the best thing from the dodgy later period. i'm a PG man all the way. BTW did anyone see American Psycho on telly the other day. i laughed my head off - the guy was the epitome of the '80s and how to get it wrong - he eulogised about how Genesis didn't hit their stride till Duke whilst getting two girls to lick each others 'O's (ahem) and that he didn't understand the Gabriel stuff. He then went on to play his favourite Phil Collins track Sussudio

Danny - could you post a screen grab as i have Pro-12 for the Scope system and it doesn't translate Pro-53 files, but i can follow the knobs (stop yer tittering at the back, get yer titters out etc.). Is that an LM-1 banging out the main loop btw?

I'm not sure what the drum amchine is, but here is a picture of the Pro53 settings. You need to add a smidge of Mod using the mod wheel (but just a touch.) ;D

You done a good job there Dan, that's a nice patch mate (and close).
Drums are Linn of course, (the detuned clap is the give-away). Can't tell if it's an LM1 or a Linndrum 2 though because it's quite clearly been miked up through a cab in an ambient room. Nice and crunchy ;D

Thanks Dan ;D. The intro drums on I, Assassin (the track) always seemed very similar to Mama, that's why i thought it was LM-1. Nice touch to mic up a cab - could probably do something similar with my Pod and reamping.

Would now be a good time to say I've never heard this Mama thing until today. I still haven't heard all of it, just Dan's intro clip which sounds nice though. I'd be tempted to download it but then again, i have a feeling Phil Collins will probably sing so maybe not

Man I can't wait to get my real Pro 5 back. Just playing with the Pro53 today reminded me of how much I get on with that synth. I think I am going to give it a big hug & I don't care how stupid that may sound

I think I am going to give it a big hug & I don't care how stupid that may sound Nothing wrong with that - i have often slept with a guitar next to me in bed... er maybe i shouldn't have admitted that.

C'mon, LM-1, Prophet 5 and scary evil laughter from Phil - it's their last decent track i reckon. And Phil's no slouch on drums, although he did get a bit obsessed in the '80s with compression and gating (hey but who didn't?), but yeah he did fuck up Genesis post-Gabriel and i think he should be shot for his solo stuff (except the CR-78 led In the Air, i'm willing to forgive a lot if it's got a CR-78 on it).

"Mama" uses three main synths.
An Arp Quadra does the stacatto (sp?) part at the beginning, plus other little things. The sound I think you mean in the song (sorta towards the beginning on top of the Quadra part) is a NED Synclavier. Then a couple of minutes in where the brassy chord pads are is the Prophet-10 that Tony used quite a lot at the time.
I'm also not ashamed to admit that I like Phil-era Genesis way more than the Gabriel. Don't get me wrong, I like both. But I do prefer the Collins stuff more. Wind and Wuthering is great, Duke is fantastic, Abacab is a little lesser in my book. I even really like 'Face Value'. The next two of his albums I think were certainly passable.
