Happy New Year,
Actually I was in Southampton recently to see Numan. Were you there? I do have that right, you work at DV Southampton? My mate lives down there so I pop in from time to time - I will have to look you up next time I'm down.
I've been meaning to ask you about how you did that great On Broadway solo on YouTube - especially that classic bit from 0:28-0:40
Cheers, Antony

guildhall. yes i was there with my 2 sons. also with pete steer from Tenek, nice gig i thought,, dv is right. good to see you if you can drop by sometime.. on broadway, ok, picture yourself stood at an ody, lock the oscs to sync. and add ring mod, a little slow lfo works well when you add the flanger, to scream. qiuckly drop 2 octaves. move the synced osc pitch to its extreme.quick with the portamento for the slide,(i used pitch envelope cos it slows up like thye ody portamento. BUT<<<<< none of that will sound any good until you put it through a guitar amp with a touch of overdrive and add the flanger and some delay.. mine is through a boss me 30. and took a while to decide on the nearest cab simulator, the secret is im afraid in the choice of overdrive and flanger settings. i did all of the above but with a jup 8000

its the same with numans METAL or M.E. sound. it is only square wave on each osc set one octave apart, (minimoog keep 2 oscs lo and set just 1 up an octave,) whack it through any harsh sounding guitar amp and add the flanger and thats it, slight detuning helps with that lumpy detuning that works against the flanger

also with pete steer from Tenek, I saw him so you were probably nearby all the time. I will try your Oddy tips. I have an amazing XITE-1 now, so I have their Prodyssey emulation as well as my native GForce Oddity, as well as various amp simulators and more effects than you can shake a stick at. I also have a Pod HD if I can't find a suitable amp sim. Was there a particular model you found most appropriate (Marshall, Vox amps etc., 2x12, 4x10 cabs etc.)? People forget about putting synths through amps these days - it's always direct and we forget what amps can do. Sometimes I use a ribbon controller for the pitch bends to try and emulate the PPC, but do you think adding love portamento, something I rarely do, is how Billy did it (I don't think he had the PPC Oddy for TTP)?

billie was a whizz at flying the ody whilst playing, all hes doing during the solo is sweeping the pitch slider of the sync osc up n down. thats what makes the scream. portamento is the obvious long slide up, the rest is all panel control, what makes it so special is that the portamento on the odyssey slows up as it reaches its destination, awesome when its delayed and reverbed, i dont think even the oditty does that which is a shame, nord lead 2 does, and most of the roland pitch envelopes, thats why i use the pitch to immitate the ody portamento,

I did mention it to GForce back in the day, but Oddity never really got much in the way of updates. I'm hoping the may update it one day make it even better. However, my Prodyssey seems to do it so I may use that instead. Yeah, Billy is one of the few people who actually play the synth, rather than just the keyboard. I have been inspired now by this discusion to do this more myself. He really knew every switch to flick - I never really think of switching the octave switch or portament live. I haven't quite got the exact sound moving the pitch on the synced osc yet, but it's still a good sound I'm getting.

and bill was fast with it,. on broadway hes flicked the octave down, portamento on then off then octave up, in a blink, make sure the ring mod is on, and overdrive it while experimenting otherwise youll miss it,
