While re-living my youth watching '80's music video's on youtube, I came across one for the 1981 tune Lunatic Fringe by the Canadian band Red Rider. It's always been a favorite of mine. I was always intrigued by the eerie, theremin-like sounds at the beginning, and what I thought was a kick-ass slide guitar solo. At the beginning of the video, you can see a faint, ghostly image of a keyboard making the first eerie sounds. At first, it looked like something I had never seen before. I had to look at it for quite a while for the image of a Polymoog 203A synth to coalesce in my mind. Who knew? I'd still like to know what makes the "blasting" sound immediately after the eerie intro. Could it also be the Poly as well? It also produces the organ-like tones later in the piece. It looks like it might be sitting on the curved top of a Rhodes Mk-I stage piano. YIKES! It produces the bright, bell-like tones. I was also surprised to learn the awesome slide guitar was actually done on a pedal steel. It simply never occured to me. It's always a good day for me when I learn how some of my musical favorites where created. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VTfVawW9TQ&feature=related&fmt=18Caution: Be ready to hit the mute button. You may be forced to suffer through a short commercial before the actual music video begins. If the first thing you see is a long-haired man staring back at you, you're good to go.
