I've decided to close the forum at NerveJam.Com. #boohoo#
This was set up originally as a place for ex-Electromancer members to keep in touch, when electromancer closed. Activity has how dwindled to the point that it's not worth my while maintaining the forum. A lot of communication had already moved to myspace anyway. The "Electromancers" page is still live, containing links to known survivors.
I've mass-emailed all the registered users, and suggested alternative forums where I know some of the old gang hang out (including me). These include dubsounds, metamatic, and sacrifice.
Interestingly, the last user to sign-up (last week) was Mark Reeder. (Underpass "Sinister Subway" Remix..)

First time I've been labelled a survivor! What happened to the non-survivors??? I checked the electromancer list , brought back memories, would I be right in thinking it's 5 or 6 years since electromancer?
I wonder what happened to Hollowcell? He was ( I think) an australian based in Japan, had a track called Romlet which I still play. Still have a lot of the electromancer tracks.

Sorry to hear that mate. I think a lot of forums have dwindled in the light of facebook. Not that that's a bad thing of course, it's progress. There are many advantages with facebook as a social network.
That said, I think a place like this may have one major advantage over facebook and that's the archive of technical help posts and articles that have been written by various contributors over the years. A virtual goldmine for anyone thinking of buying or restoring an old piece of analogue gear.
There's a permanence to forums which lends itself to this sort of thing, whereas facebook posts are forgotten as quickly as they're made and sometimes it's difficult to be heard over the shouting.
I just think its a great pity that you had to close Paul.

Just back from me hols.
Sorry to hear your news Paul. I hope you'' stick around here.
Personally I find facebook and myspace far too fragmented and ephemeral and I no longer use them. I guess time will tell who is the dinosaur.

Hi All, I have no plans to drop out of anything! There was simply no activity going on, and the phpbb software needed a major update. So I decided to pull the plug. I'm already on myspace, have been for years. It's where I tend to post stuff I'm working on.
I joined facebook last week, as an "artist" called nervejam. I went as far as setting up my discography. I was looking for the option to find friends, and it suggested that I create a "profile". So I did. And everything I'd set up disappeared instantly. Cheers. So I'm now "Nerve Jam", an individual. Sigh.
I've contacted their support people, but heard nothing. There are a couple of other users who have the same problem on their support pages, again, with no reply. Not impressed so far.
P.S. I have NO intention of ever setting up a personal facebook page..
Christ, why the hell would I want people who knew me years ago to know where I am now, or what I'm doing. If I'd wanted them to know, I'd have stayed in touch?
Got a message from friendsreunited the other day (I have an alias on there), inviting me to a reunion. My reply was that I'd "rather gouge out my own eyeballs, and eat them, than meet you lot again". Again, if I'd wanted to stay in touch, I would have.
Is that weird?

Again, if I'd wanted to stay in touch, I would have. Is that weird? Not at all. I made the mistake of using my name on my facebook page and I just feel a little exposed now . I mean even your Mum can see what your upto. I have also been "found" by my old alumni. Now please tell me how having somehow managed to live without me for 23 years, they now are compelled to get in touch and greet me like we were best buddies back then. Not sure whether 1 They're having a mid life crisis 2 They want to apologise for being cunts 3 They are divorced and need contacts 4 They want to start a pissing contest Now is THAT weird?

I don't think there's anything particularly weird about it.
I didn't care much for Facebook at first. I was concerned for instance about being tagged on photos my friends were posting of social gatherings, especially those where I may have been a little worse for wear, (pissed). I don't mind sending myself up but I do like to choose what I would like to make public.
Whilst I appreciate some couldn't care less about broadcasting their entire lives to strangers, I do have an issue with that. However, it is quite simple to edit your default privacy settings to restrict the publishing of tagged photos of you and to restrict who sees what information you give out. In my case, I made myself the only recipient of tagged photos. It doesn't stop someone finding them on my friends profiles but if they really need to dig that deep then I feel they may have some sort of problem.
Regarding ghosts from the past. If you get a friends request from someone you have no time for, there's no need to be so "British" about it and grant them access for fear of upsetting anyone or letting the side down. Deny the bastards! If they were unpleasant to you in the past, fuck 'em!
I'm not part of the social networking demographic either but I do run a business and I have a myspace, facebook and twitter account because they are great ways of letting people know what you're doing.
As a musician, it's a good way to make yourself visible and to meet like-minded people. It doesn't work if you have a small group of friends and so it's fairly dull to start off with but as soon as your network begins to grow, you can often be surprised by the responses you get and may well make some good contacts.
In much the same way as the electromancer site created a community of electronic musicians who all got to know and interact each other, if you hadn't joined the site, you wouldn't have heard of these people.
The law of the internet jungle is a trade off between greater visibility and less control over your privacy. You have to learn to play the game. I'm no expert but exercising restraint over what personal detail you publish on facebook and finding ways to generate interest amongst your group of friends is a great promotional tool.
For example. Posting "Got a hangover from hell today and my wife has booted me out again" is pure voyeurism for those that read it and apart from a few "oh you poor thing" responses, is unlikely to serve any positive purpose. Telling people you have a new single out, a gig on Friday and here's a free mp3 download of one of the tracks from my new album is great marketing.
It all comes down to what you want to do with it and whether the technology has something you can use to your advantage. My best advice to anyone is try to keep people informed of your work but to do it in an entertaining and engaging way so that people enjoy reading it, feel involved and don't get the impression you're annoying them with spam.

Gotta agree with Shaun here. I'd never waste my time telling everyone about my hangovers etc. So I'm not into Twitter either. (Although twitter can also be used for marketing..) The good thing about electromancer (and dubsounds) is that we can be as anonymous as we like. ( I briefly masqueraded as "James Neve", and also had aliases such as SynTronik ) Even myspace is easy to stay anonymous on, and yet have a huge network. Unfortunately, the de facto standard right now is facebook, and while I'm aware that you can secure it, by default it's wide open. A bit like next-door's wireless network. Hi Guys..

Actually I have 2 active facebook pages, one is for "sound and vision",for work (retouching) related people and "music people" and the other account is for my martial art/fitness related friends. I think some people use facebook/twitter as a modern version of a diary but often with attention seeking overtones , such as people how put constant apparently random updates to their mood swings! there's also a leakage from the culture of celebrity, being known or celebrated but for what for in most cases.Music, art or something is fine but not for posting "feeling much better than yesterday" to everyone!
facebook as Shaun said is good for business and networking and getting stuff heard or seen.
I still maintain a myspace page (got about 8 tracks on there) and will continue to use that for new tracks, and hopefully upload completely re-worked and new stuff once the last piece of the jigsaw is in place!
I have a twitter account but have never used it... not yet, can't see the point of using it for the sake of it, but I set it up so I would have the "Tokyohunter" name before it was taken by a manga toy seller who started using the name too.
Dubsounds is like a familiar lounge with comfy seats whereas facebook is busy club with blaring music and people spilling drinks on you! And it's nice to have both, well maybe without the drink spilling perhaps...

Why does face book look so drab. My space has lots of customisation options but even Shaun has'nt tarted up the drab black font on white page of facebook.
On a funnier note I have just recieved a friend request from a girl in my year at uni who famously said at one drunken party.
" I do love my boyfriend...but he's so far away"! thus immediately absolving herself and lowering the drawbridge as it were.
Now THATS a story I'm happy to share in my club but would never post on Facespace

Yeah actually, surprised they haven't given customise options, even simple ones to change background and text colour.
alot of myspace pages are a mess though aren't they?

Oh man
I think we're in exponential growth phase now. I'm swatting them back like gnats. Just realised I have no visible details on my home page so I'm toying with some exotic revelations.
e.g I am:
Transgender a Hermit in Prison (convicted stalker) quite like the irony of that one
Or finally declaring my unspoken love for whomsoever befriends me and making plans for immediate physical consummation

Given Bern's observation about some custom myspace's being a mess, (too right they are) it's probably for the better that Facebook keep it simple. It's a bit emailey and microsoft yes but at least it doesn't assault my eyes, (jumping animated this that and the other, red text on green backgrounds etc.) It sounds like you're about to become the next Facebook celeb the way you're going Joe Not sure about inventing a persona though. It would take a lot of up keep but then it's your imagination. The big downside of facebook for me is all the spam. To make it worse, the people spreading it seemingly have no idea that they are annoying the crap out of their "friends". I've posted polite requests asking them to stop posting shit on my wall but it doesn't stop it. Now I'm being more aggressive about it and deleting "friends" who bulk post this drivel. A lot of people are savvy, know the game and are respectful but there's a lot of bored newbies who have no idea. "Look love, just buy the album and sod off" #shot01#
