Mark from Cosine Sun has just sent me his entry for the competition and it's given me the boot up the arse I needed to do one myself. If Gavin and Tokyohunter get there's in as well at least we'll have four tracks which is good

I just went off, made a cup of tea and sat down for an hour and half knocking up a basic guide for my chosen Foxxmatic track. Well I was going to surprise you but it's just gone so well (and so quick) that I had to let you hear it so far . As per, I normally do a cover by getting as close to the original as I can (to get all the parts in and my favourite sounds) and then figure out ways to subvert it. That way works well for me because its much the same as working on a traditional remix (assuming I have the multi-track). At the moment it's all Prophet 5 VST but some of the sounds are very close to the Odyssey and I may well keep them. I'm not happy with the bass sound yet (and the second arp) but the idea is to get the parts down asap. It was interesting in that only one line is out of 4/4 (I thought there'd be more to be honest listening to the original). It's only the 1st arp that loops over 1½ bars (hence a different time signature). I'll likely replace some of the VST stuff with real hand played analogues before I'm done though (I like doing that). Q? I was thinking of introducing percussion. Mainly I'm wondering what the original would have sounded like with CR-78 in tow. Anyone think that's a good idea or should I just leave it as Foxx did as a homage to Philip Glass

Just got back from Istanbul tonight and dloaded this...
I'd like to hear it with percussion added, that would be interesting. How do you go about working out the notes for the melodies? (I'm sure I asked you this before). The idea of going from making it sound similar to working it somewhere new makes sense to me. I was going to do this one if I could work out the notes, might have a bash as I'm sure we will end up with 2 very different results.
How much are you intending to changing the sounds used here on the eventual finished version? That high long noted sound is from the prophet 5 vst?

Just got back from Istanbul tonight Welcome back I'd like to hear it with percussion added, that would be interesting. I thought so, but it would be minimal. Just a heartbeat and white noise things with tons of plate reverb I reckon. How do you go about working out the notes for the melodies? (I'm sure I asked you this before). I can't really explain it Bern. I just hear something and play it. I've always been able to do stuff like this. It's exactly the same as when I used to paint and knowing what colours to blend to get an exact shade and hue. It all happens very quickly as this clip shows, all five parts fell together in an hour. How much are you intending to changing the sounds used here on the eventual finished version? I won't know that until I sit down and start playing around with it mate. The frustrating part for me is that it may not progress any further. Copying someone else's work is relatively simple. Abstracting it and calling it my own is another thing all together That high long noted sound is from the prophet 5 vst? Everything is Bern. It was the first sound I went for so I guess I spent more time on it. High notes are easy to make similar anyway (as many a Vox Humana cloner has found). Bass notes are much more difficult. I think the reverb is the key to this particular sound, especially the clunk you get from the glide where the notes change. It would be an interesting theoretical challenge if you did Glimmer as well Bern but artistically, I would be keener on hearing your take on something else. Somehow, I had you down for the track "The Garden" (complete with dawn chorus birds ;D).

I can see why you are pleased with this so far Shaun. It sounds great. I'd be interested in hearing some sort of percussion with it too. I imagine it could add a certain something to the feel of it.

Cheers Dan ;D I feel a percussion track will be my route for diversifying really. Once I take it down that road it will open all sorts of new suggestions which Foxx possibly didn't consider for the track. Or at least that's what I'm hoping

Finally settled on doing Metal Beat. Started on it last night. Been playing around prior to this to get sound choices etc but what tends to happen is I end up with a completely new track.
I think Metal Beat is suited to what I want to do with it, the garden would be also so maybe do that later on using the same sounds for consistency (as if they were both from the same sessions).
Now Metal Beat has vocals... ok maybe...

Been working some more on mine today. All I need to do now is wait a few days to mix it. If anyone wants to hear it as is (today), I've done an extremely rough mute/solo mix on the desk. I always do one of these before mixing so I can listen for clashes in the subs. It's NOT a proper mix though in any shape or form. Anyhow, PM me if you're interested. Any news on your Bern?

This is tempting, very tempting. but this time I'll opt to wait for the finished version (nicely polished) It could be interesting to hear the rough version at a later stage though, to show the benefits &/or differences that a professional mix/master can make ?

So what's happening with the tracks members have sent in for this compo so far then? I for one am looking forward to hearing the results of their hard work. I bet they are all great considering the contributers. ;D

A quick question regarding Shaun's version of Glimmer:
What did you use to create the "squelch-clap-snare" sound on your track?

Those are the marching sounds lifted from the Sex Pistols, (I've got a feeling I mentioned this). I processed them with an analogue filer (Sherman) so I guess that's what you mean by squelchy and then merged them with my Clap Trap. The whole thing was then re-processed with delay and verb. the Clap Trap was also used with quite sharp parametric EQ to provide the slap-back clap which punctuates the rhythm now and then. Glimmer RhythmosisGo on, fill yer boots
