The only thing I would add to that is that I don't tend to open up the filter fully - I like to open and close it to add expression, like the counterpoint in the Vienna verses. My Filter Cutoff slider is crackly though so I have to be careful with that! I use the Osc 2 Mod Depth (source ADSR) slider to change the pitch of the synced Osc 2 - if you get it right you can get a lovely nasal 'honk' which I got close to at about 1.33 Really digging that Line 6 Liquaflange at the moment....

Thanks chaps ;D Will have to see about a Liquaflange for Christmas An expression pedal could sub for your crackly filter slider Andy, unless maybe you're planning to get it fixed up soon anyway.

Colin. Could I get a copy of that patch sheet pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease ! Nice patch ! ;D I have a copy but will all due respect to Billy (who created the patch sheet from memory, I believe), if you just replicate the panel settings on the Ody it sounds _nothing_ like his famous sound. It's a lot to do with the effects and all to do with the playing style. He really worked that mutha, opening and closing the filter, adding portamento and wild vibrato and of course changing the pitch of osc 2 to make it scream. The basic patch is easy to replicate on any two osc synth: Both osc on sawtooth - 2 synced to 1. Change pitch of 2. Both oscs full vol - also ring mod output at full vol. Filter wide open. FWIW, Billy had a MkII (black and gold) Ody, not a whiteface as sometimes reported. Although I reckon it was an early MkII with the filter from a whiteface, if that makes sense.

The patch sheet i think Andy maybe talking about is probably from Overacker Odyssey reource which i posted some time back.
Billy's email is somewhat open to interpretation as to which slider positions he is talking about. Here is the actual email text and see how you interpret it. Billy is not at all precious about the sound so i feel ok with doing that. he did also say that in the studio the Oddy always went trough a guitar amp to a mic for a better sound.
here it is
Hi Colin. If you are looking at your ARP - Oscillators 1 and 2 in sync. Up Full. Saw Wave. Ring Mod up Full . Above have LFO near top. Speed Like Violin Vib. Knob to Right Up Full. Knob further Right Down to Bottom. This makes it very loud. Bottom left have LFO up a little ( Saw Wave ). That is moved for expression. Going Right. The Second slider in for moving up and down to get that whistly metal sound. Good Luck! Billy
As Andy said this sound is ALL about the fx. Billy had a Mk11 oddy for Vienna and later a Mk3 hopeing for reliabilty cos the Mk2 kept breaking down. The main reason for changing to the Oscar later was in search of reliabilty. J wire contacts causing pitch problems was main issue.
The oscar ran through a guitar boogie box whatever that is instead of the Electric Mistress to achieve the same sound partly because the oscar filter can be overdriven much more than the oddy to create distortion into the patch. Oscar first appeared on "Love's great Adventure"

Hi Colin. If you are looking at your ARP - Oscillators 1 and 2 in sync. Up Full. Saw Wave. Ring Mod up Full.So as Andy said, 2 saws, synced, both on full volume and with the ring mod slider up too. Above have LFO near top. Speed Like Violin Vib. Pretty fast LFO speed Knob to Right Up Full. Knob further Right Down to Bottom. This makes it very loud.Filter cutoff wide open, zero res. Bottom left have LFO up a little ( Saw Wave ). That is moved for expression. Osc 1 lfo modulation slider up a bit, give it more for extra mod (no PPC on the Mk II remember) Going Right. The Second slider in for moving up and down to get that whistly metal sound.Play with the Osc 2 pitch mod slider with adsr selected as the source - much the same a messing with the master osc 2 opitch slider (maybe a bit more progressive in response? Certainly easier to reach for). Gets the sync sweep wailing and give the ring mod something to get its teeth into too Strange - I've only ever had to clean my j-wires once in 5 years. Although admittedly his machine will have seen a fair bit more action than mine Fancy making that switch to a land of flakey pcb connectors - unluckeeee...

All this stuff about Billy's patch makes perfect sense to me. Plugging in a Les Paul doesn't make you Jimi Hendrix. The fact that it's almost all "performance" makes me love what the guy did all the more. Must run off and play "Slow Motion" really loud and bang one off

Plugging in a Les Paul doesn't make you Jimi Hendrix. Not least because he played a Strat #poke#

Well as a Strat owner myself I can certainly confirm the gist of your theory...

I think the smokey atmos probably didn't help the j wires much as well as a greasy stage hand bouncing it about.
the Oscar probably wasn't around long enough to give problems and he doesn't have it now but he has the Oddy freshly restored so that tells you something.
As i said in my intro post the guy is bloody hard to sound anything like. definately a one off and i have a feeling he improvised many of his solo's rather than sticking to a set note pattern. I saw him live twice in 85 and he never played a solo the same twice.
By the way Shaun hasn't you ceiling had enough Artex by now. Jordan you can't make a statement like that without breaking out the strat and wailing to us.

Jordan you can't make a statement like that without breaking out the strat and wailing to us. Just because my dad bought me it for christmas doesn't mean I ever learnt to play it. It's only a Squier btw, though an early Jap one, for those who know about such things

The track is called `Les Enfants` and its a Jarre- Oxygene era type track. You certainly used all the right sounds! I'm not a Jarre expert by any means but it sounds like yer man to me. Top work fella!
