Time for a new competition?
Try this for size:
1. Pick any one favourite electronic act from all time.
2. Compose an imaginary intro track to be played while the curtain is raised and the artist/band step onto the stage.
3. Keep to the era. Each intro has to sound "in period", i.e. if you are Tangerine Dream circa 1974 it wouldn't be quite right to use samples or FM synthesis.
4. The deadline for the competition is SUNDAY 30TH JULY 06 but entries can be sent in at any time up to the cut-off date.
5. Pick your intro (and any questions) below.
Best of luck ;D

I'll try Ultravox "Monument era"
Numan would be too obvious and then i thought Pink Floyd would be good with lots of lush strings but then not really an electronic act.

Whilst im quite excited by the idea.Im having trouble with number 3,and i cant think of a purely electronic artist id like to do.
Also, most bands have totally different music playing before they hit the stage. So are you wanting us to create a track like the band would have playing before they come on stage,or a track like their own stuff? Im confused.

Electronic is open to interpretation. A lot of so-called "rock bands" have a heavy synth bias. If they use synths and experiment (rather than pout and pose with their fingers on the presets, they're in as far as I'm concerned). Thomas Dolby is as much rock as he is electro. Pink Floyd experiment with synths and have done some serious electro head shit. PIL (Careering) were quite electronic at one point but the Pistols we're not. Talk Talk were always a rock band but courted the synthpop arena for a while. The Prodge are electro heading punkwards. Goldfrapp are electro heading glamwards. The Commodores (Machine Gun) were Moogiefunktastic before they became a "ballads only" spewfest. Parliament and Cabaret Voltaire are... well just bloody awesome. Nuff?

Aahhgg!! Back on fookin dial up pro tem. Maddening enough to turn you in to a luddite. Bastaaaardd!!!!!!
Anyway, very cool comp idea, not so intimidating trying to create an intro rather than a complete song.
This may be implicit in the word "compose" but should the piece be entirely new or can it be a variation of the artist's work as in replicas and webby?

...should the piece be entirely new or can it be a variation of the artist's work as in replicas and webby? That's a fooking good question Joe I'd have to say entirely new or... so far away from the song it's giving a nod to, that it takes a while to clock it. ;D

it would also be cool to know what song your act would then open with/segue into.

Ok shaun dude in the interestes of trans hemisphere harmony and maintaining the happy vibe at dubsounds all I meant was.. In thinking though an intro for a band, in my imagination it seemed natural to consider what the opening number would be after the band had walked on. A huge crescendo of swirling synths would not be best followed by a quiet ballad.. (or maybe it would). I simply conjectured that the intro would have to be in some way complementary to what followed..... And, if thats the case you guys might have thought of what you're chosen band would have followed your intro with. Hence the question. It seemed to me to be part and parcel of the compositional process. And the "Royal we" comment just meant to be a friendly poke at you saying "we" are not interested in your reply and assuming the plural. So thats it . Chums? Or shall I get me coat
