It's been a while since the Numan 25th anniversary comp, so I was wondering will there be any more.I know this kind of thing was discussed recently and the idea of a collaboration thing instead was suggested, however additionally I just thought reading alot of the posts that Kraftwerk are rated highly by all including me so maybe a Kraftwerk tribute/covers comp would be interesting especially with the styles of most people here being more Numan-esque ,as alot of Kraftwerk covers are typically techno dance versions which I think don't really work well. Of course Shaun would set the rules etc. Just thinking aloud, would anyone be interested?

Excellent idea,
I love hearing other peoples interpretations of different songs, and,as you say there are a few numan influences on here(although not everyone)so kraftwerk with a hint of numan may sound cool ;D

I liked the Kraftwerk sounds very much so would love to hear some of them re-created or re-invented by Dubsounds members.

Sounds like a pretty cool idea Bern. A non-techno Kraftwerk covers competition... I'll give it some serious thought

Great I'm glad you guys are interested. I've got about 7 cds of Kraftwerk covers and I would say the ones that work make the tracks their own,2 spring to mind , Balenesque Quartet's "The Model" and Siouxsie and the Banshees "Hall of Mirrors".The bad ones tend to try to clone the original but loose the quality of the original and add a dodgy techno/trance beat to it. I think because in the Kraftwerk tracks everything is playing a purposeful role rather than filling a sound wall, there is therefore alot of useful melodies that can be played with considering how stripped down some of the tracks actually are like Neon Lights or The Model.

I'm not suggesting a start date yet for this ... but I'm curious about anyone else's views or ideas on doing a Kraftwerk covers comp???

It's a fine idea. I have zero inspiration for a treatment, and even less idea how to record well it if I did, but it would be churlish not to have a go. Maybe we could wait 'til the New Year though before running with it? Get the family stuff dealt with first ;D

Yeah I was thinking 2006 too. I'm just pondering which tracks at the moment.

Now 2 months into piano lessons so playing with more than 1 finger is a real possibility. Sign me up and If I have time I'll have a go. Though I predict it may well be the aural equivelent of aggravated anal rape on your ear drums!!!!!

After Christmas sounds good but there's nothing to stop us planning before hand. Anyone got any ideas of how to manage this? Do the songs get selected and picked from a list? I know techno covers are banned for the simple fact that everyone and their hamster have done them but are there to be any further stylistic limitations. I suppose a banjo version of The Robots is out then?

I suppose a banjo version of The Robots is out then? Could be onto a winner there - Bill Bailey did Are Friends Electric? on the banjo (at my request) when I saw him live. It rocked

I think sylistically then only limitation should be no dance version of the techno/trance/hard house etc style. They have been done over and over with Kraftwerk and don't really IMO bring anything new to track.Whereas reggae which could be seen as a type of dance music would be very interesting because it takes it in a completely defferent direction. Maybe one more limitation, we must try not to sound like the original,so use different sounds, maybe change to tempo,or treat vocals in a way not expected,or even combine different elements of tracks.
I think anything from Trans Europe Express to Computer World should be enough choice (and throw in Tour De France and Autobahn tracks as well as those 2 are from their golden period.)
Spoonz: you mentioned Neon Lights, the last cover of that I heard was by U2 then before that Simple Minds.Could be a good choice it has alot of potential!
Hopefully all we have time to join in including GaryCee too - does he log in here ever?

Just read online that in 2006 Kraftwerk's back catalogue is being re-released in a remastered form.I wonder if there will be any rare tracks included, such as demo/alternate takes?

I've always liked Kraftwerks Music Non Stop, I wouldn't mind having a go at doing a version of that for this tribute idea. I hear a CR78 style drum pattern in my head already ANd loads of MXRphasing going on I may need to keep the drum sequence/pattern similar to the original for my idea - is this ok within the rules ?

Good the ideas are starting to roll.
Can keep same drum patterns.Main rule I was suggesting is not to attempt to create a track that tries to sound like a reconstruction identical to the original.Completely changing the instrumentation will help alot. This could even take the form of doing a "Computer World album version" of an old track like Hall of Mirrors so that it would fit perfectly as a track from the Computer World sessions. Of course you could do it in your own style or in a style of a particular genre(with your own flavour added) such as a dub reggae track or an unplugged (or even "Power Cut version"!)
